Florida Crime Rate Down

Criminal Defense / Friday, June 1st, 2018

Bad news for criminal defense attorneys, the crime rate in Florida is the lowest it’s been in 47 years. According to statewide statistics, there was a total of 612,374 crimes committed in Florida, a 4.5% decrease from 2016. If you look at the number for the past 7 years, the crime rate has dropped over 25%!

Major counties like Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach also saw major decreases in crime. In Broward County reported crimes went down from 66,421 to 64,934. In Miami-Dade County, reported crimes went down from 111,219 to 107,172. And in Palm Beach County, reported crimes went down 48,613 to 45,895.

However, while the overall percentage of the crimes was lower, reported rapes saw an increase this year from 7,583 to 7,934. This 4.6% statewide increase could be due to tense political climate in society and the ever popular #metoo movement that was birthed from the Harvey Weinstein scandal. In Broward County, rapes rose from 559 to 579. In Miami-Dade County, rapes rose from 796 to 874. In Palm Beach County, rapes rose from 511 to 550.

Although statewide the total numbers of murders in Florida decreased, in both Broward and Palm Beach County the number of murders increased (Broward from 81 to 95 and Palm Beach from 76 to 92). The total number of murders in Miami-Dade decreased from 198 to 188.

Other crimes that had a decreased statewide and by individual county include robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and car thefts. It’s important to remember that crime rate refers to reported crimes and not the actual number of crimes committed. Thousands of people commit crimes every day but that doesn’t mean they are reported or caught.
